  • Black Hair

Let’s get this straight. It’s not magical, it’s not uncommon and it definitely doesn’t warrant wondering hands. Black people hair is no more spectacular (or afro-tastic) than <insert colour> people hair. Throughout school however, this was not the case. Of course in college and university the excitement died down, but in primary and secondary (where black people were in short supply) my hair attracted a lot of attention. I would see them coming from a mile away. Kids, bolting down the playground with beady eyes and gnashing teeth - some even foaming at the mouth, like a rabid animal. They...

  • Doing a Degree

It used to be the case that you would be expected to go to primary school, then secondary school, after that do a few A-Levels at college before culminating your education with a degree at some university. Not all of that was compulsory to get a well paying job, but it was the path that a lot of people chose to take. Nowadays, so many other avenues exist. You can get an apprenticeship, become an intern or start your own online business. Everyone can do something. I’m a traditionalist. I chose the culminate your education with a degree at some...

  • Snapbook, Facechat

About a month ago, Facebook joined Snapchat in the list of social media apps deleted from my phone. It was a carefully considered decision. In fact I probably spent too much time deliberating the idea, but eventually I came to the conclusion that it just had to be done. Reason being that Facebook was taking over my life. I would be in the library and instead of studying Caesar Ciphers, I would be studying the number of likes on my latest post. Following that I’d begin a discussion on a UNILAD video, then to finish it off, I’d conduct a critical analysis...

  • The Final Year

There’s an ugly page my university runs that I’ve joined recently. It’s basically where students go to hash out their frustration at not being able to find accommodation before the new term starts (in just over two weeks), and barely anything gets done to resolve it. On the page you also get frequent posts of other students displaying their interest in finding another student to potentially buddy-up with and get a house. That ‘interest’ seems to be inclusive of everyone but me. I hardly got any replies to my messages and if I did they’d be rejections. It’s weird to...

  • Speak

I had an English teacher who would always suggest when we’ve finished writing stuff, we read it again to ourselves out loud. The aim was to pick up on mistakes we might not have noticed otherwise. Revolutionary. But what if we don’t like the sound of our own voice? That’s always been slightly true for me. I think I sound like a geek. Although on reflection, I think I just don’t use my voice enough. So when I do speak, it’s not the husky and sexy vocal vibrations I imagine myself with, it’s a thing which etches it’s way out of my mouth....
